There are literally millions of web-sites containing music. There are more and more where you can download a song (or part of a song) so you can hear it before buying. We've tried to give you a cross-section on this site, to give you a choice.
I don't know how some of the companies manage to sell their CD's and other merchandise so cheaply. The MCPS (Mechanical Copyright) and PRS (Performing rights), plus others, can all claim royalties even if your song is only playing online for, say, 30 seconds. The cost of these licence fees, plus packaging, postage, labelling plus a blank CD can mount up - this is before you start advertising.
Although the big companies would be able to handle this easier through producing large quantities, but then they have to contend with a wage bill on top.
Thankfully, lots of companies do try to keep prices down with special offers, discounts, etc.
